Biography
Pau Dones was born in Aragon and raised in Barcelona. He indulged in many musical projects before starting his own, which he began with his brother Marc. As the band were finding their sound and taking off, he worked at an advertising company in Barcelona.
Jarabe de Palo’s first success was an album called “La Flaca”, which was released in March 1996. Unfortunately the album didn’t achieve much commercial success, only managing to shift 12,000 copies in seven months. However, the title track from the album was used as a TV advertisement, and the album finally became a commercial success in Spain and beyond. It reached number one in the charts and was certified six times Platinum, making the top 40 in four countries. Throughout their career, their sound evolved and matured maintaining their sales on an international level. They also collaborated with various other musicians such as Elena Anduja and Jovanotti. Jarabe de Palo embarked on many international tours performing sold out concerts to audiences who would sing their songs back to them.
In 2008, the band made an announcement that they were going to leave their record company and take an independent route in their career. They established their own record company called ‘Tronco Records’, and released an album called “Orquestra Reciclando” (which is Spanish for “Recycling Orchestra”) making new arrangements of their earlier hits. They have since received Grammy Award Nominations.
Live reviews
Perhaps Spain's most internationally recognised rock band, Jarabe de Palo have been touring for almost two decades and led by the showman Pau Donés they have amassed a strong, cult-like following for their latin rock.
They pull a bold move to perform exclusively in Spanish and even if the audience do not understand the lyrical matter, great guitar riffs and heavy drum beats sound the same in every language. The way in which the band attacks the show also means that everybody gets involved and as they appear to rapturous cheers, and the whole venue instantly raise their arms under the command of Donés as they tear into opener 'Ilusinaciones'.
They run through an extensive set reaching from all parts of their large discography whilst also showcasing new material from 'Somos'. It is assured to say that playing in Spanish has not affected Jarabe de Palo's universal appeal and they appear to be going from strength to strength.
Jarabe de Palo is a fun loving band who boast their Latin Rock sound hailing from Spain They are fronted by Pau Dones, who sings with a smile and leads this band with a great amount of conviction at the same time. He is one of those people you just can’t help but join in with when he sings. “Depende” is a set opening like nothing I’ve ever seen before where the band take to the stage bringing family members with them, the singer Pau Dones is holding his child with him. “Dos Dias en la Vida” brings such a huge party atmosphere to this set, with an infectious bass line over a four to the floor beat, making this audience dance relentlessly, as though they have no control. There are two things about this band that I love with a capital L, and that’s that they sing in their native language of Spanish and that they have the best time performing. Definitely worth the watch.
The concert was at the Murray Theater in Salt Lake City. The website where we purchased our tickets (Smitstix.com) said that the doors opened at 6 PM. When we got to the venue there was no one around and the doors didn't open until 8:40pm. The organization of the event was appalling. No communication to anyone from the staff. Terrible.
Once the show started the band was amazing. They left everything on that stage and played on even when there were technical difficulties. Professional and incredible entertainers!
Overall the venue and the people that organized the event (from the door people to the sound guy) were awful. But the band rocked it like they always do.
Such a great concert!! From beggining to end Pau transmitted such energy to us fans. I sang every song with such happines XD my boyfriend went with me and he isnt into this type of music but he loved all the adrenaline and energy the band shared with us!! We hope to see them again soon here in Tampa, by that time my mom will definitely come to see them with us cose she loves the band!!
Lots of love from Boricuas in Tampa :D
Great Concert;
the sound was not too balanced but the athmosphere and the content (they performed the new and old hits) were really great. They also managed to make some song in Italian(interesting) Jarabe still has this great mesh between latin american and good pop/rock
What a treat to see a band of this caliber at an intimate venue like Fulton 55! That band was tight, the set list deep and the personal connection connection to the audience was palpable. Really really enjoyed this. Amazing.
One of the best concerts I have ever been to. Jarabe de Palo are so humble and nice people. No curse words or reference to beer, smoking or anything like that. Just an awesome band comprised of genius musicians.
Amazing show, amazing venue, amazing bands!!! I loved everything about it. It was an intimate and soulfull night! I wish they would do more concerts like this at the Bandshell!
