Biography
When they formed, the New Yorkers intended to make music free of any stylistic restrictions that they felt they would have to conform to. The band were lucky enough to sign with Triple Crown Records after just two shows who would go on to release the band’s debut album ‘Your Favorite Weapon’. The album was a fairly straight Pop-Punk record and as the band’s sound began to evolve throughout their career many of these songs have been left out of the transition.
During the relentless touring schedule for their first album, the band were able to write follow up ‘Deja Entendu’, French for ‘already heard’, which became the album that would really define Brand New’s sound. It was also the start of their broader success as the album eventually went gold and garnered radio play in multiple countries.
After increasingly high profile touring slots, the band signed to Interscope records and began work on their third album however complications with leaking demos made this a rough patch in the band’s career. In 2006 though, their third album ‘The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me’ was eventually released to critical and commercial acclaim, selling nearly 60,000 copies in its first week.
The popularity continued for the release of fourth album ‘Daisy’ and although the follow up is yet to come, there is no doubt that Brand New will be back bigger than ever soon enough.
Live reviews
I love Brand New as a band and always will. However, I won't be seeing them live again (and that's not just because of their anticipated 2018 disbanding date). I thought their set was a little depressing back in 2014 at Summerfest and now 2 years later it has only gotten more depressing. The only song played off of Your Favorite Weapon was No Seatbelt Song and before he even played it he admitted to it being a horribly sad song. During the 90 minute set I want to say that there was at least 15 minutes of just filler noise where they were jamming or just letting the feedback ring through the audience. Then the ending was was very anticlimactic. There was no "this is our last song" warning; just about 5 minutes of an extended outro to Jesus (I think if I remember correctly; as I mentioned we were not warned it was the last song so I wasn't keeping track) followed by Jesse saying hope you have a good night and walking off stage. There wasn't even a hope at an encore. The other band members shortly followed and the roadies started packing up. It's clear they are just doing this because they have to and they aren't really into performing anymore; or this could have been an off night and they are still the band I've loved since high school. Regardless, I won't be seeing them again because I want to keep the image of circa 2008 Brand New in my mind.
Brand New has been one of my favorite bands since I was an angsty middle schooler, some 11 years ago. They have come a long way since their first album, Your Favorite Weapon, in 2001 and as they've matured so has their music. With four albums to date (and each getting progressively better), it was no surprise that their best selling album was their most recent. You'd think with 10+ years of fandom, I'd be a regular at their concerts, but unfortunately for us West Coasters, Brand New doesn't make many appearances on our side of the states. Frontman, Jesse Lacey actually stated that this was the first time he had ever seen the Golden Gate Bridge (!!!). So with this being my very first Brand New show and there being a 5 year gap between their last album, I wasn't sure to expect.
It was one of the greatest concerts of my life. Not only do they sound exactly like their records, they are incredible musicians. Aside from a few short anecdotes and introductions, Jesse didn't talk much and instead focused mainly on the music. From "Seventy Times 7" to "Sink", they played a good mix of old and "new". If you were a fan of Brand New back in the day, or only know their more recent stuff I strongly suggest seeing them live.
Brand New is a must-see for any fan. What I love about them is that their style seemed to change along with my music tastes for the whole 10 years I was a die-hard fan.
I saw a majority of their shows in the Devil and God-era, and the performances stayed true to the sound on the album, but much more passionate and personal live. In between albums, there was never a more exhilarating moment as when they debuted a new song, or one they were working on that would remain golden in its elusive demo glory. Even better if you had previously (obsessively) scouted those demos beforehand and saw them live, knowing the words.
The most important show I saw was the first time at House of Blues during the Deja Entendu-era. That album is just perfection and it may or may not be rare to hear the majority of those songs live today.
I recently read that they are working on new music, but backtracking to the style of Deja Entendu and Devil and God- so if you love the sound of those albums, do not miss their show- and be blessed to hear any new songs or demos live.
It was a great concert. There was so much happening, the energy, the lights, the setlist, everything. I don't know where to begin.
Maybe just with the beginning, when I came in i felt a certain vibe, there were so many different people, old, young, boys, girls, punk etc. I don't think I wouldnt have hung out with most of those people if it wasnt for the concert. Brand New really connected us.
They played a lot of heavy songs with a few slow ones, it was a nice mix of the two.
The one thing i really missed was the communication with the audience. Jesse never really made any conversation between the songs, the songs were played after eachother very fastly with barely any pauses, it kept the energy alive but it was also a bit unpersonal.
After all it was a great concert and i'd love to see them again oh and Brand New if you're reading this would you please play "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot"?
Please?
As expected, Brand New was incredible. This was my first Brand New concert even though I have been a huge fan ever since Deja Entendu came out, and boy, have I been missing out. I hope to go to another one before they call it quits.
It seems crazy to me because I've been to other concerts where the musicians incorporate a lot of screaming, but they tend to hold back so that their voices aren't completely spent for the next set of shows, but Jesse screamed his heart out with no regard for future shows. It was amazing.
If I had had enough space and/or battery on my phone, I would have recorded the entire concert, because they were amazing.
It's so hard to put into words how incredible this band is live. Jesse's emotion and heart he puts into singing is simply uncomparable to any other artist I've seen. They beginned with playing 2 new songs before playing a number of hits off of Deja Entendu. Followed by this, they played the entire album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside me which I will never forget for as long as I live. If Brand New is coming near your city on this tour, its an absolute necessity to see them if you like post hardcore and emo music.
I absolutely adore Brand New. They have been one of my favorite bands since I was 11 years old and I don't forsee that ever changing. Their show last night was absolutely amazing, it's everything that I hoped it would be for the past 13 years. I do wish they played for longer/ played more of their older music since Your Favorite Weapon and Deja Entendu are two of the greatest albums ever recorded. But I will say that hearing Okay I Believe You, But my Tommy Gun Don't and Soco Amaretto Lime live was perfect.
Brand New live is and always will be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I have seen them twice now and both times they did not fail at delivering their absolute best. They have some of the most loyal die hard fans, me being one of them. There's something intimate about going to a show where every single person in the crowd sings every single word to every single song. I absolutely loved it, I had the best time and I can't wait to see them again! Brand New for life! ♡
What a show. Brand New is a band that puts their all into ever performance. That raw emotion that you can see in their lyrics is perfectly translated into their on stage performances. The fans help make the experience though. Hearing everyone all at once shouting out the lyrics to Soco or Jesus, that makes the experience whole. This is a band that I would highly recommend everyone seeing at least once, especially with that 2018 deadline quickly approaching.
Brilliant band, creates such atmosphere live. They don't keep talking about stupid BS in between songs either, they just get on with it. Their setlist was unique to any other show on the tour - and for us, they played the WHOLE of their second album, Deja Entendu, followed by some of their popular tracks on Devil + God. Probably the best show I've seen a band put on live!
