Biography
In his early years, Stanford peformed in a band called “Twitch” in his native Australia. However, when he decided to pack up his bags and travel around Europe, he started busking on the streets to help pay for his trip and Dub FX was born.
His unique show, which involved mashing up genres such as Dub, Reggae and Dubstep, whilst using various live looping and sampling techniques as well as beat boxing, proved to be incredibly popular, after one day his friend BD filmed and uploaded one of his performances to Youtube. The video went viral, giving Stanford his first taste of fame on the Internet.
In 2007, Dub FX released his first album, “Live in the Street”, which was an audio collection of his various busking performances in the previous years. In 2009, he returned with his first official studio album “Everythinks A Ripple”. Stanford claims the album was created purely through the use of free samples, and loops of his own beatboxing and vocals. At this time, he began touring with his newly married wife, Flower Fairy, whom he met in Manchester at one of his shows.
In 2010, Stanford released a collaborative dubstep album with fellow artist Sirius, entitled “A Crossworlds”. The album was released under the collective name Kila Mega Giga Tera, and saw Dub Fx try his hand at a darker sound. More recently, Dub FX returned to his trademark sound with his second studio album, “Theory of Harmony” released in 2013.
All of Stanfords albums have featured various political themes such as social mobility, world events and revolution. All of Dub FX’s albums have been released on his own independent label “Convoyun.ltd”.
Live reviews
Australian street performer and DJ Benjamin Stanford better known as Dub FX has gained a huge reputation on the Australian and European circuit for a performer who originated from the humble streets. The main reason he has such a lofty reputation on the live circuit is the fact through vocal looping and a pedal drum he is able to create the sounds of a four piece band completely solo. It is pretty incredible to watch as he weaves rich and textured hip hop beats over reggae falsettos whilst weaving it all together effortlessly.
With almost a decade of experience on the circuit, Stanford has been selected for a number of performance events in the UK including the prestigious Glastonbury and the alternative BoomTown Fair. He walks out in a slightly bemusing manner as the audience who have been waiting for this appearance will have noticed that there is no need for roadies as Dub needs no equipment moved into place. Instead he once again creates all the instrumentals through his own vocal, trusty layering mic and pedal drum. The whole tent explodes at the finale and offers the performer a deservedly raucous round of applause.
I stumbled into a live street show of Dub FX when I was in Belgium. He was performing with Flower Fairy. He normally performs with other artists like that since he's about making the music and the effects to make the music more, as his name suggests but he did some singing too and he sounded great.
It was definitely laid back. He was not dressed up at all. It was nice and warm out and clear. I was amazed at how well behaved everyone was. People up front were sitting so others could see. He was in the middle of the street square and everyone was circled around him. He talked to the audience and shared stories.
He did some cover songs I recognized and that made it even more enjoyable. I think he did a great service to those songs as well. It's hard for a performer to top an original but I think eh did. I am amazed by how someone could perform in this manner.
He's essentially a one man band by playing the music and instruments through all the effects and setting them at just the right times. He also got the audience involved which is always fun. I am for sure going to check out more of his music.
Dub FX and Woodnote were simply amazing! First time seeing both, still hyped 2 weeks later!!! Sound was phat, performance on point, Concorde 2 is a great medium sized venue too but their choice of beer on tap wasn't to my liking, not that that's Dub FX or Woodnote's fault, jus' sayin' =P Would definitely purchase tickets to see Dub FX and/or Woodnote again without hesitation!!! (Please get Courage onstage to perform It's Alright with you next time please? So many bangers already in Dub FX's catalogue but that one song would have topped it off for me - Love, peace and groovy beats all around <3)
This is one of the best shows I've been to in a very long time. They are dynamic, explosive and truly amazing artists. I was blown away by the extreme mixing and layering of his vocals and Andy's piano and sax. Something truly to behold in person whenever you get the opportunity, never miss a show if it can be helped.
DUB FX just keeps evolving, experimentalist, innovator and pioneer. and he gives his Work free to download. My Hero And Fellow Brother.
I have followed his work for over a decade and seen and heard his influence evolve through other Artist's.
Keep spreading the word.
