Quite why Nottingham beatmaker Matt Cutler chooses to go by the stage name Lone isn’t entirely clear; perhaps it’s a reference to him going solo after the breakup of his old band, Kids in Tracksuits, or just a nod to the fact that he stands alone on stage, but it’s difficult to envisage how he could actually feel alone at one of his live shows, given the energy and love that’s so frequently extended to him by the crowd. Away from the live scene, collaborations with the likes of Azaelia Banks have made a name for Cutler, but he remains in his element in a packed club; he’s a fixture at some of the hottest venues in the UK, and has made several appearances at Manchester superclub The Warehouse Project. He’ll be back there in October, and the crowd should expect his intelligent approach to EDM to carry over onto the stage; he blends cuts from his six albums to date cleverly, with his sets smartly crafted with the sole objective of working the crowd into a veritable frenzy.
I’ve been waiting to see Lone for around 10 years. I missed him when I was living back in NYC and honestly thought I’d never have the opportunity to see him again. When his show at Kremwerk popped up on my Songkick, I immediately bought tickets.
I’m so glad that I did. This was one of the best dj sets I’ve ever seen in my life, if not the best. Kremwerk was a perfect venue for the show, given its intimate size and a really great crowd.
Over the space of 3 hours, Lone flowed in and out of a variety of electronic genres and eras. It was an honor to see him. If he shows up back in the US, I’ll be there.
