Having been bought her first guitar age 11, Aplin, influenced by Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen, soon found a musical outlet for her creativity. During her studies at the City of Bath College, Aplin participated in recordings the college’s label BA1 Records, before earning a considerable fan base for her enticing covers of artitsts such as You Me at Six, Cee Lo Green and Bon Iver on her YouTube channel.
In 2010 Aplin made an appearance on the local radio station BBC Wiltshire ahead of her debut 5-tack EP entitled “Acoustic”, which later reached the Top 25 in the UK iTunes album chart. From the release, the song “Reverse” featured on the E4 TV show “Made in Chelsea”, exposing the musician to a new and young audience.
Aplin released her sophomore EP “Never Fade” in May 2011 and introduced a wider variety of instruments and sounds, including a notable folk influence. In support of the EP Aplin performed four songs for BBC Introducing at the revered Maida Vale Studios, including the highly-popular cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You”. A third EP “Home” by the singer-songwriter arrived in January 2012 and cemented Aplin’s position as a new and young British talent and featured the title single “Home”, which featured on the BBC One TV drama “Prisoner’s Wives”.
In February 2012 Aplin signed with Parlophone Records and was the featured artist on the 2012 John Lewis Christmas Advert with her cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”. Ahead of her debut album, Aplin released her major label single “Please Don’t Say You Love Me” in early 2013. Her full-length debut “English Rain” arrived in shortly after and charted at No. 2 in both the UK and Scottish album charts. The singer launched her own record label Never Fade Records in 2012 as an outlet for her own songs as well as other similar artists, and has since signed welsh act Hannah Grave and Saint Raymond.
Gabrielle Aplin has the voice of an angel. I saw her perform an acoustic, intimate gig at Rough Trade East and it was astounding. In just 25 minutes, she made me long for a voice like hers. Gabrielle Aplin doesn’t need the accompaniment of the band that’s on her record, all she needs is her guitar and voice. As you’re standing there watching her perform, you forget about the world around you as for that moment, all you care about is listening right to the very end of the song. You wouldn’t expect that Gabrielle Aplin started off by uploading covers of bands such as Paramore and You Me At Six to YouTube. Her voice is so different to the likes of Hayley Williams, that Gabrielle Aplin puts her own unique touch on her covers. It’s after this success that she released her debut album ‘English Rain’ and is why I was watching her do a promotional gig in store Rough Trade which she needn’t do as the album sells itself. The highlight of her in store gig would be her performance of ‘Home’. It’s a delightful song about realising where home is for you. It will touch anyone whether home is a place or if it’s with the people you’re with.
