Jarle's first musical endeavour came in 1996 when he formed a band called Explicit Lyrics with Fridtjof Nilsen. The band lasted three years and released three albums whilst together, the first being 'Fleshpulse' with 'Flow' and 'Lipshave' following. Bernhoft achieved better success with his next band Span which consisted of himself as vocalist, guitarist Nilsen, drummer Fredrik Wallumrød and bassist Vemund Stavnes. They released two albums, 'Mass Destruction' in 2004 and 'Vs. Time' in 2005 which charted at #10 on the Norwegian Album Charts, shortly afterwards Span disbanded and Bernhoft moved to his next endeavour.
After Span dissolved, Bernhoft began to collaborate with a number of Norwegian artists including Hanne Hukkelberg, Dadafon, Bigbang. He also played with Green Granadas under the pseudonym Rod Hot. In 2008 he released his first solo LP 'Ceramik City Chronicles' which peaked at #4 on the Norwegian Album Charts, his most successful release at the time. It received support from critics and fans alike. His next album was released in January 2011 and was titled 'Solidarity Breaks', it topped the charts in Norway and entered charts in France and Denmark.
Berhoft took to the road to promote the release, touring all over Norway as well as shows in Germany and France. The next album 'Islander' was released in 2014 and charted at #1 once more in Norway, he was invited to perform at Glastonbury for the first time and the BBC featured an energetic performance of his single 'Wind It Up' in their coverage.
Considering Jarle Bernhoft has 3 number one albums in his homeland of Norway, he probably isn’t a well-known name overseas yet. Now though, having taken his amazing live show to places like Glastonbury this year, that may soon be about to change because one thing is for sure – when you see Bernhoft live you remember it.
An immeasurably talented man, Jarle plays guitars and pianos on stage, looping and soloing to create a full-scale one man band effect. If you were just listening, you’d never guess that there was just one man on stage creating all that music. His spectacular musicianship is though, in a way, just the accompaniment to the real star of the show – his magnificent voice. Jarle soars through an incredible range, hitting falsetto highs and roaring soulful lows, all delivered in a passionate manner without ever missing a note. Anyone who sees this show will be immediately converted to a fan. There is no way you can watch Jarle Bernhoft perform and not think that he is a uniquely gifted musician and soon enough Jarle will be the worldwide phenomenon he deserves to be.
