As you might guess Sleep’s musical performance is a high voltage, in your face type doom metal show that will have you trapped in the heavy sludge of their tasty guitar licks. When performing live they have stacks of large guitar amps piled high on the stage and turn them up to the highest volume. Matt Pike tunes his guitar to very low frequencies allowing him to get the deepest, heaviest tones out of his guitar. Pike often plays angular, atonal riffs on his guitar that gains much comparison to Tony Iommi’s guitar style from Black Sabbath. Al Cisneros adds the most depth to the performance with the loud, resonating sounds of his bass guitar. The band plays long drawn out songs that seem to drone on forever with their incredibly dense and heavy tones. Pike often creates very catchy riffs that are bound to get stuck in your head through his motifs in the songs.
Sleep’s stage theatrics are not highly elaborate, but they do correspond appropriately to their performance. Smoke fills the stage, and dim, blue lights wash over the background while bright, white lights penetrate through the dark landscape of the stage. Matt Pike is always seen shirtless at one of Sleep’s performance with his elaborate tattoos exposed over his body. Sleep’s setlist stretches over most of their discography and includes most of the songs fans want to hear like “Nain’s Baptism”. Sleep has definitely garnered the reputation of being a legendary band within their own genre and have been called the ultimate stoner rock band of all time. Seeing Sleep blast out the complete sludgy sound of metal they are so renowned for playing makes for the ultimate experience.
