Temples have worked their way to this high point in a relatively short amount of time, making their achievements all the more impressive. Formed by the duo of frontman James Edward Bagshaw and bassist Thomas Edward James Walmsley in 2012, Temples originally started as a studio project however additional members were soon added as their popularity began to build.
After releasing some home recordings onto Youtube, they began a partnership with Heavenly Recordings’ main man Jeff Barrett who went on to release the band’s debut single ‘Shelter Song’. With members Samuel Lloyd Toms and Adam Smith enlisted, the band could now begin to play live and continued to build their following through gigging. After dates with the likes of Suede and Kasabian, they finally embarked on their own headline tour in October 2013.
With the support of UK publications like NME and DIY, the band really began to develop a strong following and managed to hit 7 in the UK album charts with their debut album ‘Sun Structures’ before heading out on the 2014 NME tour in support of Interpol and Royal Blood. Not content with dominating just the UK, they soon set out to broaden their reach, playing dates in Europe and Australia and even appearing on American TV when they played on The Tonight Show.
An unwillingness to compromise of their sound and vision has lead Temples to being one of the biggest new acts in the UK and if they continue, Johnny and Noel might not be the only famous fans they find themselves with.
I both discovered and found great love for Temples at Wilderness 2013. Having found myself lost at a Baby Comedy Theatre I found my ears had trained themselves onto what turned out to be "Keep In The Dark" being played on the main stage.
Curious and loving what I was hearing I proceeded to make my way over to the stage and enjoy the whole set. Amongst the shower of psychedelic musical delights, I was introduced to more of their great work including "Shelter Song" and "Mesmerise". The crowd were extremely receptive to their performance which was one of the best of the day and a highlight of the whole festival.
I've since bought their album "Sun Structures" (one of my favourite albums of 2013) and look forward to their next batch of lovely stuff. So do yourself a favour and check them out live when you can.
