A wonderful evening of original music: Jemima (vocals and ukulele), David Boyter (guitar and mandolin), Susan Appelbe (cello) and Tim Lane (tongue drum and what sounded like a processed Mbira), wove magic between them, captivating the audience who sat before the stage, giving the music their full attention.
The songs were rich and deep - flavoured by breathy sighs from the cello and minor chords on the guitar and ukulele but buoyed by the tongue drum's soft percussive counterpoint and mandolin's golden stitching throughout the deeper colours and weft of the compositions.
Jemima's voice was clear and strong, with a full palate of tones and textures. She is a great storyteller and conveyer of a broad range of emotions.
The venue itself was perfect - a great sound system and pleasing acoustics; ample space for an intimate setting, with several rooms manned by friendly staff. It was great to see others sitting, rapt on the floor before the stage, giving their full attention to the music, as Jemima's songs deserve.
A great evening and a treat for the senses.
