Never let it be said that writer's block can't be a constructive thing. It's because of that very phenomenon that the Hölljes siblings Ian, Eric and Brittany found a name for the band that they and their childhood friend Elizabeth Hopkins formed while studying at Duke University in 2009. Their mother was writing a novel about a called Delta Rae who accidentally summons a pantheon of Greek gods to earth, and her kids were so taken with the name of her protagonist that they took it for their band very soon after she began writing the story. The band debuted the following year with their self-titled first EP, and once they started touring proper they drafted Grant Emerson and Mike McKee to play bass and percussion, respectively. The band built up a devoted following very quickly, and in 2012, said following gave the band $30'000 to record their debut album “Carry The Fire” with.
After recording the record and shopping it around the band signed a record deal with Sire Records, and the album was released in June 2012. Ever since then, the band have gone from strength to strength, touring all over the world to audiences of ever increasing size and even releasing a single with Fleetwood Mac icon Lindsey Buckingham on guitar. Their second album “After It All” was their first entry into the Billboard 200, even charting at number three on the Heatseekers chart, and because of this, everything seems set up for Delta Rae to become a massive deal in the next couple of years. They have the world at their feet, and for that, they come highly recommended.
I saw Delta Rae at the Napa Valley Expo in Napa, California earlier this year when they opened for The Cure. This folk rock band made up of a bunch of geniuses (brothers Ian and Eric are Duke alumni, and their sister Brittany graduated from Cal) really blew me away and kind of stole the show from The Cure. This group’s got amazing chemistry, and everybody is really top-notch at their role; even with six members, there’s no real defined leader, and it’s really a sight to behold when so many super talented musicians can all collectively decide to put their egos aside and come together to form something that is so much more than the sum of its parts. The standout track of the set was Morning Comes, a hopeful ode to the working man’s struggle. The crowd interaction was amazing and on point all night, with funny zingers at all the right times and the perfect songs for every moment. Beyond that, you got the sense that this band is genuinely grateful for each and every fan that came out to listen to their music, and that’s exceedingly rare for a band as successful as they are. With Delta Rae’s second album coming out this year, everybody should make an active effort to go out and see this group when they get a chance, they’re amazing.
