La Banda el Recodo biography

Banda Sinaloense el Recodo de Don Cruz Lizárraga, which is often referred to as Banda el Recodo for conveniences sake, was founded in 1938. The Mexican band specialise in banda and ranchera music.

The band was founded and directed by the Mexican family, the Lizárraga family of Mazatlán, Sinaloa in México. The band is mande up of a large number of musicians, all of whom play a variety of different instruments, and singers. The original and still performing band members are: Alfonso Lizárraga, Joel Lizárraga, Carlos "Charly" Perez, Geovanni Mondragon, Mario Alvarado, Abel Moren,o Omar Rodriguez, Carlos Montoya, Jorge Lopez, Jose Lizárraga, Oscar Alvarez, Luis Ibarra, Josue Mejia, Victor Sarabia, Gustavo Pimentel and Alfredo Herrejon. Aldo Sarabia was also an original member but is unfortunatrly deceased.

Cruz Lizárraga founded the band when he was a young man and shaped the band to what you see today. He named the band after his own name and the town of his birth. He also discovered each musician. The instruments that make up the band consist of four clarinets, three trumpets, a tambora, a tarola, a tuba, three trombones, two alto horns and two singers.

The band is highly popular in Mexico and have played several very expensive shows and private parties. Their discography is enormous but just a few of their famous albums include their 1979 hit 'El Sinaloense', their 2014 'Haciendo Historia' and their 1992 '13 Rancheras Y Cumbias' which was followed by their 1993 album '16 Rancheras Y Cumbias'.

Banda Los Recoditos biography

Banda los Recoditos reimagined Mexican banda music for the younger generations, offering a more hip, loose and upbeat style that has seen them break into the North American market, as well as being favorites of the Latin pop world.

Formed by friends and family members of La Banda el Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga in 1989, the group hail from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. Fronted by the two vocalists, Alfonso Lizárraga and Pancho Barraza, Banda los Recoditos is made up of more than a dozen musicians, playing a variety of instruments including clarinet, trombone, trumpet, tambour and percussion. Throughout the 1990s, the group released several albums, through an association with Musart, which saw them find moderate success.

Towards the end of the decade, the original vocalists left, finding replacements in Carlos Perez, Luis Angel Franco and Carlos Sarabia. This change in lineup would prove to be fortuitous for the act, developing a more contemporary banda style that quickly found popularity amongst Mexican youths, appealing to the MTV generation with their entertaining music videos.

Banda los Recoditos found new life, becoming increasingly popular, with this being recognised in 2005 after been awarded with the ‘Popular Breakthrough of the Year’ at the annual Premios Oye! awards for their album, “Si No Existieras.” For their next record, the group teamed up with their parent act, La Banda el Recodo, releasing the 2006 album, “Dos Generaciones.” 2007’s “Vengo a Decirte” and 2009’s “Seguimos Enamorados” continued to find an ever growing number of fans yet it was in 2010 that Banda los Recoditos were to find breakthrough international success.

“'¡Ando Bien Pedo! ,“ their 15th release, went on to top the Billboard Latin Albums Chart, with the title track also topping the Latin Singles Chart. Their crossover success made them household names in Mexico, as well as one of the most popular bands in Latin Pop. A steady string of albums continued which helped to maintain their popularity amongst an ever expanding audience, making Banda los Recoditos one of the most successful contemporary banda acts.

Live reviews

The Mexican banda group have been going strong since way back in the early 1940s, and are still performing today. Of course the line up has changed extensively since the original group, it’s lovely that the legacy of the band continues in new members who bring a new spirit to the group, and go on to create new and exciting music.
The band opened the show with the title track from the first ever ablbum Banda el Recodo from back in the 50s, and performed a few of the classics before moving onto their newer material from La Mejor de Todas, and Haciendo Historia. And indeed they are making history with the group having been together in various shapes and forms for so long. Seeing them live is incredible, with the live brass instrument, great vocals that harmonise brilliantly with each other, and the fabulous drummer holding the group together. Although the music is predominantly in Spanish, it’s really not a problem if you don’t speak the language, because the tunes are so catchy and the musicality is perfect, so you feel as if you understand the narrative through the melody.

For those not in the know, Banda is a kind of traditional Mexican music heavily based around brass instruments and Banda Los Rocoditos are one of the foremost players of it on the world scene, perhaps second only to their parent band Banda los Rocodos. The former was formed by friends and family of the latter in 1989, which says a lot about their popularity as people, as a dozen members formed the original band and it’s only gotten bigger since then, even after the departure of a number of vocalists. No matter which side of the Atlantic Ocean you reside and no matter how familiar one is with traditional Mexican music it’s very, very easy to be impressed by Banda Los Rocoditos. This is a band the size of a small orchestra, with four members in total not playing brass instruments and only one of those playing a percussion instrument, in this case a single snare drum. Yet the music they create and perform is by turns lyrical, evocative, thrilling and deeply moving. They possess the kind of chemistry a band can only gain with twenty five years of experience to their name and it truly must be seen to be believed. This is simultaneously music as heritage, and music as true art, and it comes highly recommended.
