As the daughter of soul singer Donny Hathaway, Lalah was destined to follow in her mother’s footsteps, through her versatile, dynamic and technically strong voice. She arrived on the music scene in 1990, with her self-titled debut album, impressing listeners right from the start. The release was a commercial success, gaining a top ten single with “Heaven Knows, which peaked at number three on the Billboard R&B charts, with the album itself peaking at number 191 on the Billboard Hot 200. This was followed by 1994’s “A Moment,” which again drew positive critical acclaim, with the album debuting at number 34 on the R&B charts.
After this initial success, Hathaway took a break from recording music, not returning until 1999, where she collaborated with legendary jazzman, Joe Sample for the GRP album, “The Song Lives On.” Into the new millennium, Hathaway released a steady stream of records, with 2004’s “Outrun the Sky” (Sanctuary Records), “Self Portrait” (2008, Stax) and “Where It All Begins” (2011, Stax). These releases continued to prompt praise from critics for Hathaway’s talent and diversity in her music, collaborating with the likes of Mike City, Rahsaan Patterson, Rex Rudest and Dre & Vidal. “Self Portrait” and “Where It All Begins” were Hathaway’s most successful releases, peaking at number 63 and number 32 respectively, in the Billboard Hot 200 Chart.
Widely regarded as on of the finest vocalists of her generation, Hathaway made the perfect choice for her collaboration with R&B/Soul outfit, Snarky Puppy. Working together on the song, “Something” in 2013, the partnership went on to secure Hathaway with her first Grammy Award, receiving the award for ‘Best R&B Performance’ at the 2014 awards.

Lalah Hathaway is one of my absolute favorite artist however I was somewhat disappointed with my experience this past weekend. First, the concert was supposed to begin at 7:30 but the doors didn't open until almost 8:00 pm. Second, the sound at this venue was absolutely HORRIBLE. After other patrons tried to alert the sound crew of how horrible the sound was, there was still minimal changes for the remainder of the evening. Lastly, I truly wish that Lalah's performance would have been longer considering she was the head liner for the show. As I mentioned earlier, Lalah is one of my favorite artists and I was really looking forward to seeing her for the first time at this concert only to be disappointed with the sound (which I understand she had no control over) and length of the performance. I sincerely hope that my review is passed along to whomever can improve some of things that were mentioned. I would love to see Lalah again but I will never go back to this venue.
The experience was in a category of its own. The opening act was different and engaging. The Dj was right on point hyping the crowd. She spun to her audience, alittle tribute to the young and mature.
When Lalah appeared on stage her sound captivated and resonated throughout the room and her short statured commanded attention.
Her performance was intimate and personal she sung every cord effortlessly leaving a cliff hangers.
My only request was to have more shows, do meet and greets, take pictures, sign autographs, tape the shows, sale them afterwards and have more merchandize to purchase.
Lalah's experience is worth every bit! She is so deserving of more accolades. Please continue to support her in every endeavor; the world needs to be exposed to more authentic music...
I love Ms. Hathaway as an artist and performer, she is the only reason I attended the event at the Pavilion at the Toyota Music Factory in Arlington, TX September 7th.
After she performed, I was planning to leave, expectantly jubilant and soul-enhanced, but I was thrown a curveball, and I’m sure it can be sourced to business decisions.
The venue is SUPERB!!!
Ms. Hathaway sounded & looked FANTASTIC!!
The sound engineer for her set was TERRIBLE !!
I don’t understand why she performed before Mr. Gill
I was deeply DISAPPOINTED that her set was so SHORT !!
Nevertheless, I am still an ardent fan, I will try to experience her live at a future event, preferably where she is the headliner
Let me start by saying that I absolutely love Lalah Hathaway and have always wanted to see her live. When I heard she was going to be in MD.I knew I had to attend even though I live in NC. I was not disappointed. She gave an awesome concert. The energy was positive and high. The venue was good although the next time I will sit at a table. Lalah did a great mix of her older hits along with music from her latest CD. I will definitely see her anytime she is within 250 miles.
Lalah was LOVE. I was completely enamored with her presence... her voice was impeccable. Those seemingly effortless runs sent me into ORBIT. The only problems I had were that she was on first and her set was so short. No sooner than I was really getting into it, she was saying goodbye, and I wasn't ready to let her go yet! I felt like I got teased. lol At any rate, I know now that seeing her at her own show is imperative. I need more!
This was absolutely the best concert I've seen in a long time. Lalah is the most beautiful, personable person I've ever had the opportunity to be in the company of. She's an exceptional artist, who presents her music in such a personal way which allows everyone in the audience to feel like she's singing directly to them. She's funny and entertaining and a beautiful spirit. I look forward to seeing her again and again.
Last night was my third time seeing Lalah Hathaway in concert. She was amazing as always. I really enjoyed the new songs off her new "Live" album. Also, this was the first time I saw her in concert with her own DJ (DJ Sparky) on stage so that was a nice groove during the concert as well. O will definitely see her again when she comes to Atlanta. Oh yes, and October 30th is officially Lalah Hathaway day in Atlanta now!!
I truly enjoyed seeing Lalah Hathaway. This is something that I have been trying to do for several years, but it was always available in another State. She is an exceptional talent and I look forward to her new music this fall. I was disappointed in the audience because they were rude and talking while she was on stage. I hope to see her again when there are other lovers of her music in the crowd.
Lalah Hathaway is the closest I’ll ever get to Legendary Donny Hathaway whom is my all time favorite singer. Lalah was absolutely awesome, her range and voice control is smooth and just amazing. The atmosphere was great and fun. Great show! I’m a fan of lalah and she didn’t let her fans down. And it was a sold out show as well! Very inspiring for me, I will be seeing her again.
All of the artists sounded great. However, the time between each set was too long (between 30 minutes to an hour). I was disappointed that Lalah Hathaway and Robert Glasper didn't perform their songs today; a man performed the songs Lalah had with Glasper. I was also irritated that Lalah didn't come to the stage until after midnight and only stayed on stage for about 30 minutes.
