The origins of their name come from a line in The War Poems by British poet Wilfred Owen, which reads "Sleep mothered them; and left the twilight sad." MacFarlane and Graham formed the band after meeting in high school whilst original member Craig Ozrel was invited to become a member after a chance encounter at a bus stop. They have cited artists such as Daniel Johnston, Serge Gainsbourg, Phil Spector, Arab Strap, and Leonard Cohen as major influences to their indie/folk sound.
They released their first album as a group in 2007 and it was titled 'Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters'. It was produced by guitarist Andy MacFarlane and mixed by Peter Katis, with the whole album being recorded from start to finish in just three days. The collection features some of the band's earliest works and writing. It was not a chart success in any sense yet it was hailed by critics and gained the band notoriety and attention. The following albums have all slowly increased their chart position as the trio's reputation has grown. 'Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave' which was released in 2014 peaked at #51 on the UK Album Charts.
'Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave' holds an impressive score of 82/100 on MetaCritic after receiving rave reviews from publications including Q Magazine, Clash and Drowned In Sound. With huge acclaim and a growing fan base, the band have enjoyed touring their melancholic tones around the world, they recently performed their debut album in its entirety during special dates at Rough Trade in New York.

Scottish indie band The Twilight Sad performed at the Barrowlands, Glasgow, in 2012. At the beginning of "Kill it in the Morning", the bass pounds like an intense soundtrack to a grisly horror film. An eerie, shrill, ear splitting guitar comes along and it's lights out until the drums kick in.
The intensity of the show is something The Twilight Sad is well known for. Not just dark noise, The Twilight Sad write songs that embrace many influences. 80s goth despair, pounding 90s industrial, catchy synth, grinding guitars, a little bit of folk, and spot on vocals are probably why James Graham himself admits he doesn't know where the band stands in the music scene.
Flashing strobe lights offer short glimpses of the band members in an otherwise pitch black venue. The Twilight Sad aren't for the light-hearted. The band often described as sad has the album titles to corroborate. "Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters", "No One Can Ever Know", and even a compilation titled, "Killed My Parents and Hit the Road" fill their catalog.
Anyone finding themselves feeling downtrodden and curious are in luck, as "Kill it in the Morning" has been offered as a free track since 2011.
This is my second time seeing the Twilight Sad and I get the impression that they are the type of people that are in it for the music...not the money or the fame. Even though Rough Trade NYC is a small venue and there was maybe 150 people max in the audience, the band played like they were in front of a crowd of 10,000. Singer James Graham thanked the audience numerous times for being there and talked about how it was such an honor for a "small band from a small town in Scotland" to be playing in New York and he seemed to genuinely mean it. He was characteristically intense during the set as well, and seemed to be transported by the songs to emotional heights of joy as well as intense lows, given the melancholy nature of some of the material. Grahams movements and mannerisms on stage are a bit bizarre and also extremely fascinating to watch and he seems to be possessed at times, almost like a more forceful Ian Curtis. His vocals were powerful yet nuanced and his ear for melody is a rare gift. The rest of the band are also great musicians and make Twilight Sad a truly wonderful live experience.
I discovered the Sad through a Scottish friend of mine. As I said to him, I loved their crepuscular back taste still seasoned with beefy guitar sound. Thereafter I went to listen to an acoustic session during their in-store tour. Andy and James were fantastic still very bashful: closed eyes, trembling hands, little words to introduce the tunes but, more impressive, the continuous say thank you to the crowd... I loved their humbleness... and then a live came in town...and I realized how strong these guys could be on stage!! Incredible energy notwithstanding the tiring tour dates, went across most of their repertoire, never the same and always kind words for us miserable audience. Not to be missed
Was an amazing night of music kicked off by your great performance gents! Sarah and I were way in the grass, but we could still feel your incredible energy and love for the venue. What a great sunset, especially with the moody clouds and nearly full moon on the rise...thanks for a memorable night...oh and The Cure were pretty good, too! Checked off a band I've never seen thanks to you guys, much appreciated! :) We hope to visit with you again next gig in San Diego! Safe travels, love your Scotch Egg buddies, Mike and Sarah in San Diego!
This band is Amazing! So much "Passion" on stage. No one performs like this! So very cool to go see a show for the opener... the rest was just a plus.
James pulls you in with those lyrics and that intensity while Andy's guitar sound simply soars. The perfect marriage between "Wall of Sound" and "Yearning" vocals. Met the guys after the show and dig this band even more as they were genuine and gracious. The Twilight Sad = RAD
As usual, The Twilight Sad were terrific. It was performance full of emotion and expertly delivered sound.
Playing songs that span their entire catalog, and some from their latest album (not released yet), the crowd was feeling it and so was the band, emoting kind words of gratitude from the lead singer.
It’s the 3rd time I’ve seen them but the best so far, with the best sound - Doug Fir Lounge has awesome acoustics!!

Amazing show, James and the guys were superb. The crowd were well up for it. Great mixture of old and new songs. Great venue also. Good luck with the rest of the tour. Go check this band out if you haven't already.
Amazing as always - very, very lucky to have seen a truly acoustic (no PA) gig. Brilliant guitarwork with wonderful, unusual chords and tuning, and James really didn't hold back with the vocals. Absolutely stunning
