Chuck D calls the rapper Substantial a "scientist" and "one of the great MCs of our time" -- and the show last Wednesday at Nectar Lounge in Seattle, demonstrated a few reasons why.
We got a taste of Sub's battle raps on "New Balance" (my favorite rap verse ever?), his social commentary on "Say Less," and some great new material like "Reed Richards" which opened the show.
He's best known for his mellow flow on collaborations with the late Nujabes, like "Hikari" (which he also played Wednesday, and is my all-time favorite of their material). The show's finale was "Blessing It," which was actually the first track on Nujabes' first solo album, 2003's "Metaphorical Music."
What an inspiration to see Sub still blessing a microphone 20 years after that classic was released. I only wish more came out to support the legend. Eye Q and Brass Beats had great sets to open.
Shout out to DJ Dave and slick guitarist Sabyu for help making this a great night!
Such an amazing show! Brooklyn is an amazing crowd! Everyone was fantastic! Shing02 and The Chee-Hoos were on point! His DJ is NASTY on the turntables - he was something special! Sub , DJ ETN, and that Stephanie Gayle singer?! WOW!! So many amazing moments during this performance, it’s so tough to keep track. You needed to be there! WHAT A NIGHT!!
The vibe at the performance was all love! I think everyone enjoyed themselves. It's nice when you get love and support from the place you grew up in. Substantial was great!
Great time, great vibes, great man. Got some nice birthday wishes from him and it made my night. Overall, great concert, and I'll definitely try to go to his next one.
