Wednesday 11th February. Oslo, Hackney. Honeyblood. First time at the Oslo in Hackney and it has that rare thing of decent food, great selection of ales and craft beers in a music venue. It does feel as if I am entering the dark side this far east. An imaginary vortex seems to have sucked anyone over 35 from the train from Highbury to Hackney. There is a coolness in the air and not just because it’s flippin freezing. Anyway the vortex gestapo has somehow missed me and my intended and we slip through under the radar clean shaven with straight legged jeans.
Honeyblood are a two piece girl band from Glasgow and as is the current vogue just guitar and drums. Its power pop in the style of Jenny Lewis with a large dash of the Voice of the Beehive. It’s a short one tonight as they only have one album which must have been played in full. They’re a little heavier live than on record but the shimmery echoed voice of Stina Tweeddale rises above it.
Highlights are Super Rat and Killer Bangs. It’s a blink and you miss it show, but enough to blow the cobwebs off the chill of the night. A good show and a good new venue to boot
Great show. It was an early one (6-10pm) so missed most of support acts. Honeyblood are super cool live, highly recommended. The guitar was a bit light in the mix so the overall sound was a little thin, but still immense considering there are only two of them. One of my favourite bands, someone described them as 'noise pop' and that sums them up for me. Perfectly crafted addictive songs but in a grungy noisy punky style. With sassy.
I've seen Honeyblood a few times now and they always put on a great show. You may have doubts about them being a two piece, but they always fill up whatever place they're playing, be it a small bar, club, theatre, or stadium.
I've been going to gigs for the best part of 25 years and Hobeyblood are without a doubt one of the best live acts I've ever seen
one of the best live performances ive every seen, absolutely brilliant!
how they make such a noise between the two of them I will never know. They played all the album which is excellent by the way.
Will defo keep an eye out for their next dates!
jez.
Awesome delicate vocals on top of a heavy sound. This is my second Honeyblood gig and it gets better each time. Venue was atmospheric - a veteranary dissection room. The only downside is that it was over to soon.
