The Split Enz have had a very unique musical journey having encompassed many genres ranging from folk music, progressive rock, and new wave. Their intricate and catchy songwriting, and flamboyant showmanship have garnered them a name as being one of the most reputable bands to come out of New Zealand.
The band has a very tight chemistry when performing, always staying in perfect tempo and playing every note with great precision. The guitar is often played in a very choppy rhythmic pattern, while the synths pierce through the rhythm to create an interesting melody. The guitars are also played in a very jangly manner creating an upbeat feel to the song, and are often run through chorus pedals to get that classic shimmering sound. Although the band is known to play some jivey, funky tunes incorporating the organ into their sound to create psychedelic vibes, they also use the piano to perform some of their softer ballads like, “Message to My Girl”.
The band is also known for their spectacular theatrics. They are very classy and fashionable, dressing in themed suits. Their suits are often very colorful and elaborate, and contain many unique patterns on them. Their stage setup is also very elaborate containing large displays of colorful lights, and interesting patterns are draped in the background of the stage. During songs such as “I See Red”, there are red lights that appropriately flash to the chorus of the song. Split Enz is a very talented band with their members having gone on to participate in other innovative musical projects. The guitarist, Neil Finn, would go on to front the highly successful rock band, Crowded House.
Split Enz always excites their audience with their upbeat tunes. The crowd is always dancing along to the music and passionately singing the words to their lyrics. Whenever Split Enz performs they might touch your heart with one of their ballads or they might make you groove along to their hit song “I Got You”.
