From being selected as a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Finalist in 2017 to the recent release of her acclaimed debut album ‘Between The Moon And the Milkman’ produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, Amelia Coburn stands as a truly unique voice in the world of music.
A fearless experimenter with the songwriting form, pairing daring melodies with unusual chord movements, Amelia takes traditional folk and jazz elements that hark back to the golden-age of songwriting as well as influences from the more baroque side of pop and rock (Kate Bush, Scott Walker, Neil Hannon) and drags them kicking and screaming into the 21st century. With her album charting in the UK and recent national airplay from BBC Radio 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6Music, as well as support from BBC Scotland and Ireland's BBC Ulster and RTÉ1, Coburn can count the likes of pundits Mark Radcliffe and Tom Robinson as fans, as well as musicians David Gedge (The Wedding Present) and Paul Heaton (The Beautiful South).
Having graced stages at prestigious events such as Cambridge Folk Festival, Focus Wales, and Costa Del Folk in Ibiza, as well as various festivals across Europe (France, Belgium, Germany and Finland), Coburn's magnetic performances have captivated audiences far and wide. Whether headlining sell-out solo tours or sharing the stage with esteemed acts as diverse as Saint Saviour, The Trials of Cato, and the late Steve Harley, her “beguiling stage presence” continues to earn her fans from across the musical spectrum.
Although primarily known for her unique interpretations of classic New Wave, Punk, Pop and other oddities, you rarely get exactly what you expect from Amelia - unless you expect the unexpected. She's constantly searching out "new" material to spin into her own fine web. She is also developing her original songwriting skills with idiosyncratic, beguiling songs about, for instance, Pirates, Sleep Paralysis and Leprechaun Museum staff. As a live performer she engages musically, visually and through her between-song anecdotes and it's not uncommon to see grown people shed a tear or two while watching her as they fall in love with her unassuming, natural charms and that voice! A curious, unique blend of folk, jazz, musical theatre and northern punk it can hypnotise with a single note then spit in your eye. Catch her where and when you can.
