There was something very transcendent and ethereal about Yuki Chikudate - front woman, keys master and radical xylophone player - when I was lucky enough to get a free ticket through a mate to see them at the Troubadour. A dimly lit, smoky stage framed the band perfectly for what was to be a journey through the recently released album Fluorescence. I didn’t really know much about them apart from that they had featured on the film Ramen Girl, but what a pleasant surprise. There’s a track called “Leave the Drummer out there” that has these mad vocal delays and 180’s mid way through the track into this psych dreamscape melody. A few people tried to catch moments of the gig, but anyone who sees Asobi Seksu will agree that it just doesn’t compare to being there. It’s a beautiful mix of harmony and rocking out that will leave you feeling like you’ve just returned from some other galaxy. I’ll admit, I’ve always had a thing for drummers, but Larry semi stole my heart and I think it was even his birthday that night. It was one of those gigs, where you find yourself whispering “wow” to your mate who in reply says, “I know”.
