Biography
Born into the Italian, German and Laden speaking district of South Tyrol, Giorgio Moroder later moved to Berlin and began releasing singles under the name “Giorgio”. The record producer’s break came in 1969 when his single “Looky Looky” was picked up by Ariola Records and subsequently achieved Gold certification in 1970. Two years later Moroder issued his debut solo album “Son of My Father”, the title track of which achieved success as a UK No. 1 single for pop group Chicory Tip. The album spawned a host of other singles including “Underdog / Watch Your Step” after which the DJ and producer began collaborating with musician Pete Bellotte and singer Donna Summer. The partnership would prove to be a driving force in ’70’s dance music led by the 1974 album “Lady of the Night”, and a year later Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby”.
The Moroder, Bellotte, and Summer trio capitalised on this success by releasing a prodigious amount of material towards the late ‘70s, usually an album every six months. In 1976 the concept albums “A Love Triology” and “Four Seasons of Love” cemented the trios’ international success as did its successor “I Remember Yesterday” in 1977. The latter release spawned the worldwide smash hit single “I Feel Love”, featuring an addictive video game-esque running baseline, soulful vocals and inspired synths.
In 1978 Moroder won an Academy Award for his score of the Alan Parker film “Midnight Express”, after which he found success on Donna Summer’s double LP “Bad Girls”. The record spawned the singles “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff” and cemented Summer as the queen of the dance floor and Moroder the production king. On top of his high-profile collaborations Moroder continued to release solo albums including 1978’s “Love’s in You, Love’s in Me” and 1979’s “E=MC2” after which he formed the disco band Munich Machine. With one final blowout album of the enormously successful Mordoer, Bellotte, Summer trio, “The Wanderer” was released in 1980, representing the beginning of the end for the disco era.
The 1980s were marked by an increase in film soundtrack work where the producer crafted the musical accompaniments to “Foxes” (1980), “American Gigolo” (1980), “Cat People” (1982), “Scarface” (1983), and “Flashdance” (1983), allowing him to work with the likes of Deborah Harry, Freddie Mercury, Adam Ant, and Bonnie Tyler. Later in 1983 Moroder started collaborating with the Human League’s Philip Oakey, which culminated with the album “Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder. Following the release the producer earned another Oscar for Best Original Song for his song “Take My Breath Away” taken from the 1986 “Top Gun” soundtrack.
Moroder moved towards remixing in the ‘90s notably of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dream (Are Made of This”, Heaven 17, and Donna Summer. In 2002 the producer scored the soundtrack to the marine documentary “Impressionen unter Wasser” after which he was deservedly inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. Following a period of limited activity Moroder collaborated with Daft Punk on the track “Giorgio by Moroder”, after which he worked with Kylie Minogue, Sia, and Britney Spears before issuing his 2015 album “Déjà Vu”.
Live reviews
Giorgio Moroder is the man, when it comes to electronic dance music. Considered to be the individual to have created electronic dance music and synth disco, this guy is also an awesome DJ! Probably most known for his song, Chase, used in Midnight Express, and I Feel Love when he worked with Donna Summer. T
his concert performance starts off with a bang with Moroder saying something to the audience then starting with remixes of famous songs like Donna Summer's Hot Stuff going into Midnight Express' Chase. This gets the crowd really pumped up and hype. The venue is amazing, there are lights of all kinds bouncing here and there. Amazingly, during all of this, Moroder is standing there at the DJ station with a very calm exterior, as if he was just working on something technical and does not seem to notice the crowd or the music.
He shows his interaction with the crowd by playing around with the music, turning down the volume of the chorus parts of songs to let the audience fill it in. This may look like an old man, but he knows how to get things hype and exciting. I loved every part of this performance so far.
Italian producer Giorgio Moroder is perhaps one of the most underrated icons in the music industry mainly due to the fact that his name creates a near unanimous reaction from the fair weather music fan who simply shrug their shoulders and say they have not heard of him. This guy, now in his 70s is behind hits by Donna Summer, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, Elton John and more.
Now you understand the calibre of artist he is affiliated with, you begin to understand the weight of his own reputation. Cruelly he has never seen chart success with his own releases despite having achieved millions of sales vicariously through his collaborators and clients. However despite his growing age he continues to take to the road with a slick band and a range of vocalists to recreate his own discography and some of his produced tracks. It is an economic and entrancing show in which to see the past five decades of pop and disco in a neat 90 minute package. There is no doubt Giorgio will be revered when discussing music from the 70s to the modern day so take the opportunity to see this icon whilst he is still touring.
Giorgio is very nice, I'm humbled that he came to Budapest. The show was really a celebration of disco. He assigned time for a tribute to Donna Summer and Bowie, while he was constantly in the shadows, doing whatever he does. He sings, tells stories, cheers for the crowd, and jockeying on the discs. Thank you for giving your time to us.
This show was not at all what I expected. Giorgio didn't make an appearance until 3.5 hours had passed and, once he did, he played very little of what he is known for. Furthermore, it was only a DJ set. I knew this beforehand but the low quality and blandness of the set was an incredible disappointment.
Perfect concert.. I suggest you to run at your nearest ticket selling merchant to secure your tickets for the next shows of the Disco Master.
Great set list, perfect performance.. Not to be missed
