The benefit of attending a gig for a performer you are not familiar with is that you have no expectations, as was the case when I saw VV Brown for the first time. I had gone to her show because the particular venue has consistently good, weekly free shows and had figured “eh, why not.” Turned out to be a great decision.
As soon as the music starts for her set, she immediately grabs your attention with a great stage presence and vocals that are just so on point. She did take the time between songs to introduce the names of the songs she was about to perform, which were mostly from her most recent Samson and Delilah album, but also included songs from her Traveling Like the Light album like “Game Over,” “Everybody,” and closed with “Shark In The Water.”
Her music is absolutely contagious. Just as she would dance and enjoy the music she was making, you had absolutely no control of your body and found yourself moving along to the music as well. She exudes so much confidence in herself and has so much fun doing it, song after song, just commanding the audience's attention. Comparatively, when she would address the audience between songs, she had a very soft-spoken demure about her. But the change in personality made you like her even more because it solidified the fact that performing was her way of letting go.
With how big the Pop world has become, I understand how hard it is to break into, but it really is a shame that VV Brown hasn’t earned the success and following that she deserves.
