Biography
Tony Cook is an astounding argument that playing video games as a kid can get you anywhere in life. After picking up Music 2000 for his brothers Playstation in 1999, he got massively into creating music on the console, buying as many music making games as he could find throughout his teenage years. This inspired him to study music technology when he got into college, and it was while he was there that he heard his first dubstep track, Skream’s “Midnight Request”. Having always been into the heavier side of music personally, he was hooked, and began creating it himself as soon as he became familiar with the genre. His first live performance came at a college end of year gig, and the reception he got was so positive that he decided to pursue a career in making music.
Taking the name Cookie Monsta, Cook began performing in the clubs of his native Nottingham and releasing tracks of his online. By 2012 his work had been spotted by Flux Pavilion, who was so impressed with Cook’s work that he signed him to his record label Circus Records. Cook’s first 12” “Riot/Level Up” was released soon afterwards and ever since then, he’s been considered one of the hottest DJ’s around. Known for creating some of the heaviest dubstep tunes around, his live act has been honed to a thing of glorious destruction, able to level any venue he plays in. He’s an artist with the music world at his feet, and everything to win. Where he goes next is an extremely exciting prospect and for that, he comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
On September 1st 2013, I made my way to Minneapolis to see the Cookie Monsta in action for the first time. I had become a little jaded with Dub-Step since its explosion into mainstream consciousness in the mid 'noughties'. The genre, I feel, has since become saturated with so many similar acts.
I spoke to a fan about ‘Dub Step’ and he categorically told me; “Nah, brother, just you wait and see. Cookies da man, takes da music to the next level. he's pushing the boundaries” It seemed Cookie Monsta, AKA Tony Cook, had been making waves since his arrival on the scene with the released of ‘Ginger pubes / Blurgh!’. Waves that had bought him a fan base across the pond and a long way from his native Nottingham. I made my way down into the basement of the venue when the music started. It was dark, hot and testosterone filled. Lights bounced off the industrial pipes that littered the ceiling and the white painted brickwork. A fitting venue for an act such as ‘Cookie Monsta,' A DJ with a reputation for the dark, loud and gritty side of Dub-Step. It didn't take me long to realise it was a reputation well earned. He spent the rest of the night spinning high-energy beats, powerful bass lines, dark and instantly catchy hooks. Tracks by DJ Hazard, Doctor P, BAR9, SKisM among others constantly brought the house down and created many moments of conversation, and shouts of approval.
With the dance floor alive with young men and women entranced by the music and Cookie Monsta stealing the stage with his energy, this was in no doubt an impressive exhibition.
An edgy, gritty, high energy and most of all, a refreshing performance by a talented and upcoming DJ!
I was super bummed, last year, when Cookie had to cancel his 2019 DC appearance. So, I was super chuffed when I got the notification he was gonna be in DC for my birthday week. He did not disappoint. Puts on a nicely-energetic and wubzy set. Between him and Doctor P, my Fitbit said I'd hit my 10,000 steps less than halfway through Doctor P's set.
Also: as good a venue as Echostage is to see a show, the much smaller scale of Soundcheck makes a good show seem all the more personal. Made a really great combo with the set Cookie laid down.
