Together for more than 40 years, the Manhattan Transfer continues to add fresh content to the genre of jazz.
Their love of their craft is infectious, every show is enjoyable, they make quite a comedic foursome at times, and their harmony is beyond comparison. Something always changes from set to set so you'll never see quite the same thing twice, which doesn't matter because it's all good. The venues provide an intimacy no matter how large or small the stage, which makes the concerts about the sound, the tone, the voices, the harmony and the history.
The 40 year history they share is betrayed by the energy they put into each show-- every song, every night, every time. There is no "cheating" by using the same playlist over and over, and there is never a moment when you feel like they are treating the night as just another performance. Every sound, every note, every song, every lyric-- it all matters and it is all insanely good. Each concert seems like their first, and you can tell that they love working, singing and performing together.
If you like jazz, 4 part harmony, vocalese, and are interested in a little music history then you need to see a concert. You'll be glad you did. They could sing from a phone directory and you'd still get that sense of how incredible they are. (P.S.... their piano player is about the friendliest guy I've ever met, and the trio as a unit is just as good as the singing.) Plain and simple, this group defines awesome perfectly.
I attended their concert here in Albuquerque few years back and it was soooooo wonderful. Love the music they do and play the songs from their songbook like BODY AND SOUL, BLUE CHAMPAGNE, POINCIANA on my piano regularly. If and when they return, I'll be attending.
Thanks so much for keeping alive such marvelous music and memories.
There is a reason why they are at the top or near the top on the Downbeat polls. This my 3rd concert of theirs. They keep me rapt & transported. In such fine voice as ever since I heard of them in 1979. My gosh they are fabulous!!! I'm so blessed to be able to attend their concerts. I'll be buying their latest album - my 14th!
