I suppose Its only fitting for Julian Lennon to grow up to try and emulate his father. However, the weight of expectance must take its toll, considering the genius of his father, the former ‘Beatle’, activist, and world renown songwriter. To take on quest to forge a career as a songwriter and word smith whilst having the eyes of the world upon you, with such an unbelievable level of expectance. Must, in many ways, be mortifying! Despite this he got of to a good start after his debut album ‘Valotte’ received a great deal of critical acclaim after its released in 1985. It brought him 2 top ten singles ‘Valotte’ and ‘It’s To Late To Say Goodbye’ and a Grammy award for the best new artist. Sadly despite a number of other records Julian was never able to achieve the same amount of success that he had with Valotte.
His songs have a distinctive quality to them, extremely thought-provoking, they tell stories of live experiences. The highs and the lows, romance, introspection and humanitarian issues which, like his father, bringing these issues into the public consciousness has played a large part in his life. In a gentle, soulful, and honest style his music reminds me a great deal of his fathers, his voice is also has similar characteristics. I’m sure after a career in the shadows, he must hate it every time he hears that, which I imagine happens a lot. Often in an ernest style his music carries the important message of ‘love one another’, ‘peace’ and ‘we are all one’.
