They can probably be fairly described as a one hit wonder, what with the huge 1998 success in the UK of their track ‘Brimful of Asha’, which went to number one on the singles charts, but Cornershop have a long history sandwiching that particular track. They formed in 1991, in Leicester, and in the pre-Brimful days, they toured with the likes of Oasis and Suede and released a debut EP, In the Days of Ford Cortina, to a superb critical response in 1996. When they finally did get around to releasing a debut record, When I Was Born for the 7th Time, in 1997, it was less ‘Brimful of Asha’ that was turning heads, and more the rave reviews that the LP was receiving, as well as the fact that it involved a collaboration with legendary beat poet Allen Ginsberg. More recently, they’ve continued to tour and record, with their most recent album, Urban Turban, dropping in 2012 and featuring a wide-ranging raft of collaborations. They continue to play intimate rooms across the UK, too, showcasing their penchant for Indian-leaning sounds as well as playing their best-known hits, too - their fervent cult fanbase remains loyal to this day.
