It’s not easy to describe Gang Gang Dance or what to expect when you go see them live. Weird, avant-garde, psychedelic springs to mind. You can’t prepare yourself for it, you just need to show up, open to all possibilities.
One thing is for sure, their live shows are always fascinating, STRANGE and other-worldly. You’re transported, with audience bodies flailing and staggering all over the place, losing all self-control and possessed by the music.Lizzi Bougatsos’ distinct banshee-like wail mesmerises with it’s trance-inducing qualities. And when she takes reins on the drums, like on “Glass Jar” and “China High”, she’ll leave you floored. Like Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance make use of all different kinds of percussion, synths and electronics, creating a tribal dance-like quality that transports you around their globe of influences - from Africa to the Middle East. “MindKilla” is simultaneously creepy and captivating. With songs bordering on 10 minutes, and an incredibly intense and transfixing performance, Gang Gang Dance aren’t for the faint-hearted. They once played a show on a Russian ferry during a solar eclipse with Japanese noise band the Boredoms. It doesn’t get more out of this world than that.
