Silverchair’s story is the stuff of rock and roll dreams, really; after winning a radio competition in 1994, where bands were encouraged to send in demos to be judged, they signed a record label and went on to sell no fewer than eight million albums. Over the course of a near twenty year career, they released five records that blurred the lines between the straightforward alternative rock sound of the past couple of decades and elements of post-grunge and, occasionally, metal too. They were still only in their mid-teens when they formed, yet went on to tour the world, with a feverish cult fanbase waiting pretty much everywhere they went; in their own corner of the world, they packed out arenas and stadiums. As their music began to become markedly more complex as time went by, their tours only expanded in scope, with an expanded live outfit, extensive soloing, and impressive visuals displayed on an array of screens behind the band delivering a formidable live show. Despite being declared by Jack Black to be the band that currently holds Tenacious D’s fabled Pick of Destiny, they embarked upon an indefinite hiatus in 2011, meaning that fans will face an anxious wait to see if they reconvene; in terms of the size of their shows, though, absence will likely only make the heart grow fonder.
