Liam Finn is the best live act I've ever seen, seriously, I've seen him 7 or 8 times and each time has been jaw droppingly good. From his early days of loop pedals and his bezzie EJ, to today's full band ensemble. I've seen alot of live acts over the years and he's one of the few that can still surprise and just generally draws you in over the course of a track and a set.
He's a fantastic annoyingly talented musician, he plays guitar, drums, theremin, or anything that comes to hand. At the end of this, his last date of a 4 week residency in London's Lexington, the pressure was off, a successful jaunt round Europe and great reviews for his latest album The Nihilist, the evening is compared by bandmates and friends offering breakdancing competitions and introducing Liam supporting himself under the Betchadupa band name from over ten years ago. The main act himself played tracks from his debut album like Second Chance through to new newer tracks like Snug as Fuck which fit in surprisingly well considering the time they came from. The night finished with an encore of a rowdy rousing cover of Beatles Helter Skelter a scrum with the crowd and an overactive Lead Balloon.
I was so excited to see that Liam Finn would be performing; he is one of my favorites. I was even more excited to find out that my girlfriend got me tickets for my birthday. She got us front row seats, I couldn’t wait to go!
It was an indoor show, which was nice. It was a sold out venue, but since it wasn’t that big I wasn’t surprised. We took our seats and I impatiently awaited him to come out and start playing. I had never seen him live and I was extremely excited. The crowd was pretty subdued, exactly what I would expect at one of his concerts. I
t’s not heavy metal; it’s a more relaxed and calming type of music. He came out with a girl to play with him. He was dressed pretty casually and she had a beautiful black top on. He started playing his guitar and singing. Closing his eyes and just listening to himself play. Towards the end of the song, he sat down and started playing the drums. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, just as masterfully as he played the guitar, he played the drums. It was the most awesome thing I have ever seen! I hope to see him in concert again someday.
