Nitin Sawhney is a British Indian musician that puts on shows combining jazz and rock with politics and spirituality.
Seeing him live in concert can be a political experience that makes you think, or it can be a wholly spiritual one that you will be able to take in on a primal level. In some shows it has been both, such as when I saw him perform "Breathing Light" to a huge crowd outdoors at a music festival. He needed no words to make his points and to make us feel. The crowd was on their feet and into it the minute he started his scat-like chanting. They ebbed and flowed and let the music wash over them. The drums were spot on, and he made the strangest but most beautiful sounds with the keyboard. He made you think with music alone, as well as made you feel. A spiritual energy was clearly felt in the crowd and we all let it wash over us and bathe us in itself. If I were a religious man I would think of it as a religious experience. Something about the music Nitin produces is simply spiritual, and it is a concert worth seeing.
So this is an artist with so many collaborations it's too many to name. In his own right though, he is an artist worthy of credit. His albums have a theme and reminds you of the pleasure of listening to whole albums. I saw his performance at Albert Hall and with full orchestra which shows his talent. At the Arts centre a modest crew but the performance was more as authentic because of the modesty. His vocalist is amazing and challenges your idea of of persons vocal range. If he played in my area every month, I would pay to see him, every time. His music had real depth and speaks to us all looking for an artist who had something worth listening to.
